What to Know:
Political instability in Sudan has been a significant challenge. The continuous shifts in governance and lack of stable leadership have hindered the implementation of effective policies. This instability has added to existing problems, from economic struggles and social disparities to the persistence of conflicts and the erosion of essential services. The persistent conflicts and political instability in Sudan have had a profound impact on the country's development and the well-being of its people.
● North-South Civil War:
○ Government forces vs. Sudan People’s
Liberation Army (SPLA)
○ The North-South civil war in Sudan was one
of the longest and deadliest conflicts on the African continent. It lasted from 1955 to 2005. It resulted in a significant loss of life, estimated in the hundreds of thousands, and massive displacement of people. The war also severely impacted infrastructure, education, and healthcare systems in both regions.
● Darfur Conflict:
○ 2003 to 2020 (but violence continues despite
the Sudanese Peace Agreement)
○ The conflict involves government forces,
allied militias called Janjaweed, and various rebel groups. The central issues revolved around land disputes, competition for resources like water and grazing land, and political marginalization of the region.
○ It resulted in widespread violence, displacement, and humanitarian crisis. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives, and millions were displaced from their homes.
Impact on the people of Sudan:
The persistent issues in Sudan, from conflicts and displacement, to weak healthcare infrastructure and limited access to clean water, have created a range of health issues and challenges for the Sudanese people.
● Health Issues
● Limited Access to Healthcare: Many Sudanese people face challenges in accessing adequate healthcare services,
particularly in remote and conflict-affected areas.
● Disease Burden: Sudan experiences a high prevalence of diseases such as malaria, cholera, malnutrition, and
waterborne illnesses, contributing to significant health risks for the population.
● Weak Healthcare Infrastructure: Insufficient healthcare infrastructure, including hospitals, clinics, and medical
equipment, interferes with the delivery of quality healthcare services across the country.
Displacement and Humanitarian Crises:
● Internal Displacement: The persistent conflicts in Sudan have caused widespread displacement, with many people forced to leave their homes and communities leading to health risks and inadequate living conditions.

● Refugee Populations: Sudan hosts a significant number of refugees from neighboring countries, further straining healthcare resources and creating additional health challenges for both refugees and host communities.
● Maternal and Child Health:
● High Maternal Mortality: Sudan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the region, primarily due to
limited access to quality maternal healthcare services, skilled birth attendants, and emergency care.
● Child Malnutrition: Malnutrition among children is a significant concern, contributing to stunted growth,
developmental issues, and increased susceptibility to diseases.
● Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Challenges:
● Limited Access to Clean Water: Many Sudanese communities lack access to clean and safe drinking water, leading to increased risks of waterborne diseases.
● Sanitation and Hygiene: Inadequate sanitation facilities and poor hygiene practices further contribute to health problems, including the spread of diseases.
● Mental Health:
● Psychological Trauma: Prolonged conflicts, displacement, and humanitarian crises have had a significant impact on
the mental well-being of Sudanese people, resulting in increased rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health challenges.
